Causes of Stroke
Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death, designating this as a world health issue. To help identify causes of stroke, specific biomarkers have been identified. These are genetic markers that are present in our blood, and would eventually help scientists to reveal who is most at risk. However, current research does not demonstrate conclusive results.
NSE: Biomarker
Neuro-specific enolase, a protein biomarker, has been identified and is still being researched as its potential role in ischemic stroke. This protein biomarker is produced in the late stages of neural differentiation, which is the process of neurons being produced from stem cell precursors. This biomarker in neurons represents the maturity of the neuron. NSE levels have been studied at emergency department admissions.
Stroke Disability: Treatments
Stroke leads to disability by affecting communication, physical movement and balance, and other cognitive abilities. Rehabilitation early on allows for the most significant recovery from stroke. Rehabilitation techniques include physical therapy and targeted strategies for improved cognitive abilities. Specifically, stroke rehabilitation facilities exist to allow for all-day focused recovery.
