Alzheimer’s disease is a leading cause of death as a neurodegenerative disorder, affecting millions worldwide. In Alzheimer’s disease, most of the dead neurons are characterized as cholinergic. The amyloid precursor protein (APP) is significant in the pathology of Alzheimer’s. Acetylcholinerase inhibitors, while showing promise in improving symptoms, did not affect the disease progression.
γ-Secretase is an enzyme significant for the APP substrate and production of Aβ. Due to this finding, there is now an ongoing search in clinical trials for γ-Secretase modulators.
